| Puerto Rico! |
[04 Jun 2008|11:56pm] |
I did a quick day and a half in Puerto Rico, flew in Sunday at 11am and left Tuesday at 1. My friends had planned the vacation and invited me - sadly, I had an awards ceremony to present at Saturday night otherwise I would have been there earlier! My friends who went... my friend Robert (who's also our official photog for Miss Asia Arizona), his girlfriend KenKen (she's on a visa here from Taiwan) and their friend Irais.
The girls had this silly thing going where they made up a story about them being related through the same mother, and KenKen (going as Paulina) was from Japan and Irais is from Mexico, but they found each other a few years ago. It actually worked with some guys! I came along and we figured I was from Hawaii and my name was Lulu. Luckily I've been to Hawaii enough tims to pretend I'm from there. It was pretty amusing and entertaining to say the least.
Anyway, quick recap:
Sunday, toured around Old San Juan, shopped and ate, went out that night to Senor Frog's (had soooo much fun! hadn't been out in FOREVER! My friend KenKen told the DJs it was her 21st birthday (she's 28) as Paulina and we got on stage and danced!), and on Monday awoke early to catch a ferry to Isla de Culebra ( a 3 mile long island about an hour and a half from the main island) to Flamenco Beach, awarded the second most beautiful beach in the world by Discovery Channel, and it IS! Clear waters and soft sand.. it's incredible! We did a photoshoot so I'm waiting for those photos. Went back to the main island and went on a nighttime kayak tour to a lagoon in which millions of bioluminescent microorganisms live and the water lights up anytime there's movement. It's illegal to swim in it but they let us get in for a few minutes - AMAZING! The kayak tour was TOUGH (we kayaked through a slim channel for about a half hour to reach the lagoon) but it was amazing. Definitely an unforgettable experience. Then Tuesday we packed up and went for the airport.
I have too many photos... I've decided that since souvineers (sp?) just collect dust, I now take too many photos! And there are more coming soon when I get them from my friends.

Since I'm gonna try to write in my LJ more often, I went back to the paid account and uploaded a bunch of avatars. I pretty much lost all the ones I used to have the last time I had a paid account, so I just made lots of new ones, uploaded what old ones I had and recreated some of my favorite. Nothing special, I'm just a simple cropper, but yeah. Take a look if you want!

I haven't even been able to see the episodes myself, but if anyone can figure it out, go to style2fashion.com, and they say you can watch the episodes on there but I can't find the link anywhere.

| Charitable Asian Fashion Show Event |
[02 Sep 2007|10:44pm] |
Ok, poor LJ. I know myspace is getting all the attention.. even BLOGGING attention!
So I'm going to cut and paste my latest idea from myspace and add in a few more things.
"Okay, so since coming back from the Miss Asian America pageant, I finally find myself with some time!
Gene (my pageant director) had talked about setting up a fashion show during the Arizona Asian American Association (4A) banquet next month, but ended up being too tied up with another event in October. So I was a little bummed when he told me it was nixed because he had prior engagements, bt encouraged me to take the reigns and bring it back to the floor. While I may still do that, I have much bigger plans!
I've done so many local runway shows, from tiny little ones in sportsbars and in small galleries like the Red Door, more popular ones like Frock N' Roll at Cooperstown and SMoCA nights, to the biggies of the year, like Fashion Ball. I've done Asian events like the Asian Festival, Filipino Independence Day, and other traditional festivals. I want to do something different; I want to attract both older and traditional crowds as well as younger, modern, trendier crowds.
Well, since my platform is cultural diversity and empowering Asian women, I want to put on an exquisite Asian fashion event that includes traditional, modern, and Asian-inspired fashions, showcasing various talents from all over the continent. Unlike festivals that only educate those about the history of these garments, I want to create interest in a mainstream way.. through high fashion. I would also love to include a small showcase of talents, traditional and modern.
I have plenty of ideas written down.. still not quite sure how to go about starting. I have the support of Gene and Miss Asia Arizona, although not sure what I'll do about monetary support. I want to do as much as I can without spending any money. Most, if not all proceeds will go to a charity.
This event would mostly showcase Asians.. models, designers, makep artists, etc. but not limited to. I do already have a pretty long list of models! Yay for pageants. ^_^
Once again, I have absolutely no experience in putting on a benefit show. But I know I can do this if I just get a little help from my friends! :)
So let me lay out what's been floating around in my mind...
Possible Venues
Once again, I'm just thinking of the places I've been or done shows at. I have NO IDEA what it would take to secure this location. So if anyone has any info, please share!
-Chinese Cultural Center: I would love to have the show in the garden area in front of the center but I worry that it'll be too small. -Japanese Friendship Garden: This place is only $1 to enter, but I worry that it'll be too serene an atmosphere for the event I want -The Icehouse: I did the women's Rebirth Fest and also Labelhorde's Stitch Fashion show here. It was quite some time ago, but I remember it have a lot of open space, great areas to work with. Just not sure how safe this area is, how much, and the parking. -Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art: This place holds the SMoCA Nights fashion shows, which are like the epitome of fashion and art here in Phoenix. It would be a wonderful place to hold this event but it may be pricey. -A hotel ballroom: Once again, this would cost money, and not sure it'll provide the right atmostphere. -Heritage Square Park: Where almost ALL the Asian events are held during the day. A beautiful place, but may be difficult to control at night.
I DID play upon First Fridays for a bit, but decided it wasn't quite the right mood I wanted.
Events
I want to be able to evoke moods with the different fashion segments, so I want to include other attractions.
-Traditional Ethnic Fashions: Just like it is. The original kimono, Maria Clara, Chi Pao, etc. No modifications or changes. -Modernized Ethnic Fashions: The here and now of cultural gowns. The Maria Clara and tierno gowns of the Philippines have gone through so many changes, they can be almost anything these days! Also, the Chinese Chi Pao has so many different variations, it's amazing. -Asian Inspired Fashions: Pretty much anything and everything Asian related, including fads that are popular in Asian countries, like Fruits style in Japan, or the various uses of Chinese silk prints. This is where designers can go wild!
These would go in between fashion segments so the models and designers will have some time to change the looks. -Traditional music and instruments: Looking into possible performers! -Maybe even a rock band if I can secure one!
Other
-$5-$10 cover, most or all will be donated to charity -A raffle (probably $1 tickets) for a select fashion/traditional piece, or donated items, all proceeds to charity -possibly booth space for designers, artists and anyone else who would like to reach out to this group -programs (b&w only, semi-low quality) complete with cultural info, designers, models, and all artists involed with contact info avail
As for models, designers, etc, etc, I already have a huge network I can work with, and I would also ike to invite other local queens to join in the fun. I know it may be hard since all the work will be volunteer only.
Possible dates... perhaps Oct, early Nov, or first week of Dec. If not, no later than January, as rehearsals for the new Miss Asia Arizona pageant would already be underway.
Anyway, that's about all that kept me up all night. If anyone has any input, or could possibly help predict how much interest this would generate, please please please let me know!!!!"
In addition to what I already wrote about, I think I'm going to cut the Mondrian hotel from the list of venues (which was suggested by a myspace commentor). I attended a model launch party there, and while it's the perfect place for a fashion show, it wouldn't work well for the type of event I want to host.
I will also strike the Chinese Cultural Center from the list as well, since the front park would be too small to accomodate a crowd of any size, and most events are held in the parking lot, which isn't the mood I want.
I've also managed to secure three designers, Jennyvi Dizon (Filipina designer), Chi (local cosplayer) and Ricky, whom I just met at the model launch party and showcased some beautiful Asian inspired pieces.
Any other interest would be great. I know Japanese inspired fashion shows are popular amongst the con circuit (I'm getting ready to help out Phoenix Comicon with the next one in Jan), but I hope to make this one much more widely Asian than just one specific group. Please spread the word!
